Though she didn't debut properly until Ant-Man & The Wasp, Hope Van Dyne's superhero alter-ego was originally going to appear in The Avengers for the first time.

With Scarlett Johansson's contract situation up in the air as the film was being written, Joss Whedon had lined up The Wasp as her replacement. It was only when Johansson signed on and Black Widow could be written back into the movie that Whedon cut Wasp out, believing there were already enough character introductions.

He decided that having seven Avengers in the first version of the team was more than enough.
