13 Awesome 2015 Movies That Deserve Best Picture (But Won't Get Nominated)

4. Me & Earl & The Dying Girl

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 82% (7.6/10) Why It Deserves Best Picture: Here's a movie that's had its passionate awards cheerleaders ever since it premiered way back at Sundance. An atypical "cancer movie" which refuses to indulge trite sentiment, Dying Girl gets the best out of young actors Thomas Mann and Olivia Cooke, serving up a refreshingly hip coming-of-age movie full of poignant insight and witty dialogue. It's been considered the Whiplash of this year's awards season ever since its first screening, the indie movie that might go from a Sundance bow to a Best Picture nomination, and with its strong dramatic heft and exceptional performances, it would certainly be well-deserved. Why It Won't Get Nominated: The little indies snagging a Best Picture nom are fairly uncommon, and again, the youth-centric story may simply fail to connect with the older Academy voters. They may also be turned off by the "current" dialogue and its refusal to be cloying and sentimental (something voters historically fall for: see Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close).
