13 Awesome 2015 Movies That Deserve Best Picture (But Won't Get Nominated)

9. Straight Outta Compton

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 89% (7.4/10) Why It Deserves Best Picture: Here's a movie we all hoped would be good, but did anyone expect it to be this great? F. Gary Gray's NWA biopic steeped audiences deep in the fever of the seminal rap group's birth, the miasma of police corruption they found themselves intertwined with in the early 1990s, and of course, their eventual decline. There's never a moment here that doesn't feel bracingly authentic, aided of course by Ice Cube's own son O'Shea Jackson Jr. playing a young Cube. The entire young NWA line-up has been perfectly cast, and Paul Giamatti adds terrific value as their manager Jerry Heller, but what's most surprising is the pic's high level of dramatic heft. An angry, incendiary film about racial profiling and police corruption couldn't come at a better time, and the later-stage scenes involving Eazy Z in particular are unexpectedly affecting. With strong reviews and a stupendous $200 million box office cume, Compton could be the underdog to root for. Why It Won't Get Nominated: For one, it's a movie about a black rap group and this is an awards show primarily voted for by white, older men who simply won't have any interest in or knowledge of the subject matter. Plus, some might find the biopic formula a little too conventional for their tastes. >
