13 Awesome 2016 Movies Everyone Thought Would Suck
9. Bridget Jones's Baby
Why It Should've Sucked: How often are second comedy sequels any good? What about ones that come over a decade after the not-so-good previous movie? Plus, the fact that star Renee Zellweger's career divebombed years ago makes this threequel reek somewhat of desperation. Oh, and the trailers were rubbish too.
Why It Was Awesome: Proof that low expectations occasionally give way to genuine surprise, Bridget Jones's Baby is a nostalgic and unexpectedly hilarious return to form for the series, for while it doesn't move far outside the formulaic rom-com box, the gag-rate is surprisingly high, the performances are rock solid and it actually manages to move the title character on in a meaningful way.
Special credit to Emma Thompson for co-writing the movie and drawing up a hilarious role for herself as Bridget's sardonic doctor. She steals pretty much every scene she's in.
