13 Awesome 2016 Movies Everyone Thought Would Suck

10. Star Trek Beyond

The Shallows Deepwater Horizon
Paramount Pictures

Why It Should've Sucked: Director J.J. Abrams bailed from this third Trek movie to make Star Wars: The Force Awakens instead, being replaced by sci-fi newbie Justin Lin (The Fast and the Furious franchise). To that end, the movie's marketing suggested that it was focused more on insane action rather than the intelligence and character-driven nature of the previous movies.

Why It Was Awesome: Beyond may not be as robust as the 2009 Trek reboot, but it still feels much more like an actual Star Trek movie than either of the Abrams-directed films, essentially playing out like a feature-length episode of the 1960s TV series.

Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella are terrific additions to the cast as the villain and new sidekick respectively, while Lin brings his usual visual flair to the electrifying action sequences, and Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin both get bittersweet farewells.

If you're an old-school Trek fan in particular, this is an easy sell.
