13 Awesome 2016 Movies Everyone Thought Would Suck

7. The Magnificent Seven

The Shallows Deepwater Horizon
Sony Pictures

Why It Should've Sucked: A remake of the classic 1960 western...which was of course itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa's unforgettable Seven Samurai. Does it really need another update?

Why It Was Awesome: Director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Olympus Has Fallen) makes a surprisingly entertaining action flick out of this unnecessary update, in large part thanks to gorgeous cinematography and a slew of charming performances.

Nobody needed this movie, but that didn't stop it delivering a relentless, action-packed western the likes of which is rarely seen anymore, especially at this budget.

Denzel Washington is every bit the bada** you'd expect while Chris Pratt is his usual wise-cracking self and Peter Sarsgaard munches on the scenery like his life literally depends on it. The third act is pure balls-to-the-wall action and exactly what the movie needed to be. Glorious.
