13 Awesome 2016 Movies That Deserve Best Picture (But Won't Get Nominated)

2. Midnight Special

Captain America Civil War Oscar
Warner Bros Pictures

RottenTomatoes Score: 84% (7.3/10)

Why It Deserves Best Picture: Another superb entry into Jeff Nichols' impeccable filmography, Midnight Special is a riveting, minimalist sci-fi thriller propelled by a fantastic ensemble cast (including Michael Shannon, Kirsten Dunst, Joel Edgerton, Adam Driver and Jaeden Lieberher) and a uniquely scaled-back approach to the genre.

While it may not deliver as many answers as those expecting a thrill-a-minute blockbuster would hope for, it nevertheless adds up to a hugely compelling, singular adventure.

Why It Won't Get Nominated: For one, the Academy hates sci-fi, they also don't really like minimalist attempts at genre films, and they'll probably find the ending too weird.

Plus, there's no single performance that drives it forward, and ensemble-led films tend to struggle a bit more when it comes to racking up major plaudits.

And given that Nichols also has his racial drama Loving to peddle to Oscar voters, it's pretty clear which film is more likely to secure a gold guy.
