13 Awesome 2016 Movies That Deserve Best Picture (But Won't Get Nominated)

1. Hell Or High Water

Captain America Civil War Oscar
Lionsgate

RottenTomatoes Score: 98% (8.5/10)

Why It Deserves Best Picture: Because it's arguably the year's best film to date, a thrilling and surprisingly hilarious neo-western that evokes a strong No Country for Old Men vibe.

With adroit commentary on a post-recession America combined with meaningful violence and a fantastic brotherly bond between Chris Pine and Ben Foster, it's one of the best modern-set westerns in decades.

Pine, Foster and Jeff Bridges give effortlessly award-worthy performances, but basically every aspect of the movie, from Taylor Sheridan's script through to David Mackenzie's direction, is absolutely top class. It would be a terrific Best Picture nominee and winner.

Why It Won't Get Nominated: Honestly, there's no tangible reason for it not to, but the film just doesn't seem to be picking up the sufficient traction, and most Oscar prognosticators have it pegged as the #11 spot, meaning it'll narrowly miss out on a nomination.

To date it's already scored Gotham and Independent Spirit Award nods, but aside from perhaps a Best Original Screenplay nod, it's probably going to miss the Oscar train, which is a damn travesty.

Which awesome 2016 movies do you most want to see land a Best Picture nomination (and even a win)? Shout them out in the comments!
