13 Awesome 2016 Movies That Deserve Best Picture (But Won't Get Nominated)
5. Captain Fantastic
RottenTomatoes Score: 81% (7.1/10)
Why It Deserves Best Picture: Viggo Mortensen gives a masterful performance as a new-age father caring for his children after the death of his wife in what is a tender, sharply-observed and ultimately hopeful drama.
While the moral grey area of Mortensen's character (namely his off-kilter parenting methods) may deter some from jumping in with both feet to support this movie, it offers some genuinely provocative talking points about how we raise our children, which just might make it one of the year's most important films.
Why It Won't Get Nominated: There are simply too many Republican voters in the Academy who will probably take one look at Viggo's character and dismiss the movie as hippie propaganda.
Plus, reviews have been more solidly positive than rapturous, even if that didn't stop the likes of The Blind Side and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close getting nominated (with far worse reviews than this film).
