13 Awesome 2016 Movies That Deserve Best Picture (But Won't Get Nominated)
6. Hunt For The Wilderpeople
RottenTomatoes Score: 98% (7.9/10)
Why It Deserves Best Picture: Taika Waititi follows up his widely-acclaimed vampire mock-doc What We Do in the Shadows with this superbly sweet, funny and poignant coming-of-age New Zealand dramedy.
Sam Neill gives one of his best performances to date as the bitter, cranky Uncle Hec, though it's young Julian Dennison who runs away with the movie in a star-making turn.
With a unique Kiwi flavour and masterful balancing of tones, there's been nothing quite like it this year.
Why It Won't Get Nominated: Too small-scale and too slight: it's quite subtle and restrained, and doesn't bank on these big emotional outbursts that typically win Oscars. In that respect, it's basically "too good" for the Oscars.
