13 Awesome 2017 Movies That Deserve Best Picture (But Won't Get Nominated)
13. Blade Runner 2049
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 87% (8.2/10 average score)
Why It Deserves Best Picture: Denis Villeneuve pulled off the near-impossible with Blade Runner 2049, delivering a sequel to a 35-year-old sci-fi cult classic, on a $170 million budget no less, that at least matched if not exceeded the quality of the original.
Its wild ambition was met only by its stunning execution, resulting in a thoughtful follow-up that's easily one of the most visually stunning films ever made.
Why It Won't Get Nominated: For starters, the Academy is unabashedly prejudiced against sci-fi movies, which in addition to film's slow pace, bleak tone and disappointing box office will ensure it doesn't connect with a decent cross-section of voters.
It'll nab a bunch of below-the-line nods for sure, and most certainly snag Roger Deakins his long-earned Best Cinematography Oscar, but Best Picture? Sadly not a chance.
