13 Awesome 2017 Movies That Deserve Best Picture (But Won't Get Nominated)
12. Detroit
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 83% (7.5/10)
Why It Deserves Best Picture: Kathryn Bigelow has been no stranger to Oscar attention over the last decade, after The Hurt Locker ended up winning Best Picture, and her follow-up Zero Dark Thirty also scored a nomination for the big one.
Detroit is another Bigelow classic, an incredibly immersive, journalistic account of 1967's 12th Street Riot, shot through by Bigelow's typically unflinching direction and a bevy of fantastic performances, especially John Boyega, Algee Smith and Will Poulter.
Why It Won't Get Nominated: The big problem here is that Detroit failed to make even its modest $34 million budget back at the box office, releasing in July to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the riots rather than opting for a more awards-friendly date later in the year.
Box office is a significant indicator of Best Picture success, and so it seems that Detroit is dead-on-arrival, and probably won't score nods in any other areas either, unfortunately.
