13 Awesome 2017 Movies That Deserve Best Picture (But Won't Get Nominated)
11. Get Out
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 99% (8.3/10)
Why It Deserves Best Picture: Jordan Peele's riotously entertaining horror satire is one of the year's smartest, funniest and best-executed genre movies, scoring near-universal critical acclaim and incredibly grossing more than $250 million worldwide against a scant $4.5 million budget.
With the current political climate being as volatile as it is, a Best Picture win for Get Out would be a fantastic statement, and even in terms of sheer film quality, it'd be thoroughly deserving as a fantastic piece of art.
Why It Won't Get Nominated: For one, the Academy likes horror movies even less than it likes sci-fi, so the genre prejudice is going to work hugely against it.
Then there's the fact that many of the Academy's older members will probably feel like they did black people everywhere a solid by giving Moonlight Best Picture last year, and won't want another "race movie" winning the award this time, let alone getting nominated.
It's an outside candidate, for sure, but despite its brilliance, the Academy's going to seem incredibly out-of-touch when they sleep on this.
