There's a surprisingly grand tradition of superhero movie actors being cast after failing their first audition: Lee Pace went for Peter Quill and ended up as Ronan, Cillian Murphy wanted to be Batman and settled for Scarecrow and Tom Hiddleston failed as Thor and got Loki. The same can be said of both Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill - though not for their own superhero movies: both auditioned for the notoriously binned Superman: Flyby, the insane-sounding pre-cursor to Superman Returns. Despite the fact that received wisdom apparently says that Josh Hartnett was the fore-runner for the role, clearly someone at Warner Bros liked what they saw, and when it came to casting the next two Supermen, they got their second chances.
