5. Hell House LLC (2016)
Another found footage movie, but this one is firmly a hit. Hell House LLC presents itself as a documentary investigating the tragic incident that occurs on the opening night of a haunted house scare attraction called Hell House.
This clever framing allows for interviews from police, locals, and survivors, peppered in between the found footage segments. In doing so, the movie avoids the pitfall that the sub-genre often falls into of feeling slow and samey. Instead, Hell House LLC is surprisingly pacey and solidly structured.
Most importantly though, it’s got some really great scares. The setting of a haunted house scare attraction means that there’s always plenty of gruesome mannequins and creepy clowns for something evil to be mistook for.
Hell House LLC keeps the scares nice and simple to slowly build the dread. By the end when all hell breaks loose, and we follow the first person POV mayhem, it genuinely feels like we viewers are running around a scare attraction. Which is super fun.
