The Matrix is an intriguing, mesmerising sci-fi-cum-post-apocalypse masterpiece. The philosophical questions regarding transformation, free will, and the nature of reality don't detract from the blazing action sequences, memorable one-liners, and slow-mo limbo moments.
While Keanu Reeves had a pretty successful career before The Matrix, the film definitely propelled him into the global eye.
The Matrix had its roots firmly planted in the post-apocalyptic sci-fi genre, with the bullet-time effects inspired by Otomo Katsuhiro, who directed Akira. It's a shame the sequels never quite reached the original's level of brilliance. Here's to hoping The Matrix 4 breaks the cycle.
