13 Broken Comic Book Movie Franchises (And How To Fix Them)
11. Catwoman
We are all clamouring to see a Dark Knight Returns-style rebirth of Halle Berry's Patience Phillips right? Well not quite. That doesn't mean the opportunity doesn't exist to take the character's continuity forward: Catwoman is one of the characters established in the Nolan-verse who could feasibly sustain their own spin-off vehicle, especially in light of Anne Hathaway's performance. She is also certainly the right profile to take the character forward, even though memories of the terrible Pitof version still sting for both audiences and producers alike - which ultimately might mean that a solo Catwoman film would have a proverbial mountain to climb, whichever route was taken. As apocalyptically bad as it was the negative reception of the 2002 version was entirely down to poor execution and poor creative decisions rather than a disinterest in Catwoman herself. Having said that the only real likelihood of a solo Catwoman film now would be as a result of another iconic portrayal of Selina Kyle emerging in a stand-alone Batman film, or as part of the wider DC Cinematic Universe that should spin off from Batman Vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice. In that respect, Hathaway continuing the character's story would be confusing to audiences already acclimatising to a new Batman, though of course there is always the possibility that she could be established in her own film before being integrated into the larger DCCU. Unfortunately for fans of the character, there are many other characters who are more viable for that kind of approach, meaning for now any potential solo career will remain limited to one of the very worst films of all-time.
As well as the odd article, I apply my "special mind" to scriptwriting for Comics, Films and Games... Oh and I cut down trees, I skip and jump, I like to press wild flow'rs, I put on women's clothing, and hang around in bars.
