13 Broken Comic Book Movie Franchises (And How To Fix Them)
7. Constantine
Obviously, work is already being done to eradicate the memory of Keanu Reeves' take on the English warlock, and though it's still too early to properly assess the new version of Constantine, from the clip that has emerged, it would seem the production values are decidedly TV level. That might not necessarily be a terrible thing, given that the show is in the hands of the hugely talented Neil Marshall, who has repeatedly proven his epic TV credentials on Game of Thrones and no matter how the show looks, it eems will be cut some slack from the fan community. You could almost hear the collective sigh of relief when Matt Ryan opened his mouth and a Liverpudlian accent came streaming forth, and though that might not seem a major thing, it is fidelity to that sort of detail that will go a long way to establishing that this is an entirely different prospect to the Hollywood/Reeves adaptation. Even with Constantine finding new life on the small screen, there already exists a cinematic property in development which could see a different portrayal running concurrently with Matt Ryan's take: Guillermo Del Toro's Justice League Dark. Like the TV series, Justice League Dark offers another avenue that could eventually lead to a new Constantine... or Hellblazer... or Constantine: Hellblazer film. This is a crucial juncture for the comic book genre that could see a great many innovations, but it could also see an increased cautiousness if some of the braver upcoming experiments don't work, and the future of properties like Constantine will be governed by the outcome.
As well as the odd article, I apply my "special mind" to scriptwriting for Comics, Films and Games... Oh and I cut down trees, I skip and jump, I like to press wild flow'rs, I put on women's clothing, and hang around in bars.
