After some less successful comedy vehicles around ten years ago (predominantly Evan Almighty), Steve Carell has lately been rebranded as an Oscar-baiting character actor, whose work on the likes of Foxcatcher, The Big Short and even Crazy, Stupid, Love has elevated him well above the traditional limits of the comedy genre.

He has some really intriguing films coming up, like the Dick Cheney biopic, Richard Linklater's Last Flag Flying and Battle Of The Sexes, confirming his serious A-lister credentials. He also tentatively has Minecraft: The Movie.

Why? What on Earth is he doing that for, when he's working so hard on his profile through solid work? Sure, he has Despicable Me 3 coming too, but he should be in a position now that this sort of thing is behind him. Particularly as the film sounds like the punch-line to the Hollywood Will Make Anything For Cash gag.

Will It Work?

He elevates the project with his presence, but it's hard not to think of it purely as a paycheck movie, and that's a shame considering what he's doing around it.
