What The Critics Said: In the wake of all that toxic pre-release controversy, the critical consensus was that Ghostbusters succeeded thanks to its strong cast and eccentric tone, ensuring this was a fun contemporary riff on the classic franchise.

Why It Actually Sucked: It says a lot that the funniest thing about the female-led Ghostbusters movie is a male supporting character, in Chris Hemsworth's Kevin, and while the four leading ladies are definitely well-cast in their parts, the script just gives them so freaking little to work with.

Neither the worst film ever that woman-haters everywhere declared it to be nor the rousing success its fans championed it as, the 2016 Ghostbusters settles for being a grotesquely overlong, wildly over-budgeted and totally uneven comedy that tries to coast on its talented comic cast, but basically just rehashes the original movie's core premise to highly diminishing returns.

At the time of its release a lot of people called the film pleasantly surprising, in that it wasn't the sheer dumpster fire they expected, but now that everyone's gotten some much-needed critical distance from it, it's safe to say that it's definitely a bad movie more often than not. That Bill Murray cameo is especially an embarrassment for all involved...
