13 Crucial Death Scenes Ruined By Terrible Acting

10. Brad Pitt Tries To Emote (And Fails) - Se7en

The Scene: Psychopathic killer John Doe (Kevin Spacey) leads Detectives Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and Mills (Brad Pitt) out into the desert under the pretense of directing them to the remaining two dead bodies, as well as confessing to all the crimes. When they get to the desert, they're given a box, which Somerset opens, appearing incredibly distraught at its contents. Doe then explains that he visited Mills' wife (Gwyneth Paltrow) and cut off her head, which is presumably in the box. Mills begins freaking out, shouting, "What's in the box!?", before Doe also informs him that his wife was pregnant. Mills is on the edge of murdering Doe (thus completing the seven deadly sins of Doe's plan), while Somerset tries to calm him down, but after some consideration, Mills shoots him dead. Why It Sucks: Few are going to argue with the fact that the climax to David Fincher's grim thriller is incredibly well-written, though Pitt does his best to derail it with a weirdly off-kilter performance which is more funny than harrowing. From his whiny shouting of "What's in the boooooox!?" to his hilariously contorted facial expressions and moans, which seem more like he's smelled a bad fart than anything, his work dilutes the tension and horror of what is on paper a fantastic ending.
