13 Disappointing Recent Films That Should've Been Great

4. Suburbicon

Harley Quinn Suicide Squad
Paramount Pictures

What Was Expected

A dark, quirky crime thriller with the Coen Brothers being as awesome as always and the cast giving strong performances.

What We Actually Got

Suburbicon had no right to be so weak considering all the talent involved, but Oscar Issac is the only one who actually does genuinely good work. George Clooney's direction is largely flat, Julianne Moore is mediocre, and Matt Damon is flat-out bad.

Even the script feels like it must have been edited down by Clooney and Grant Heslov, since the Coen Brothers' usual stuff is certainly miles ahead of this.

Part-race commentary, part-dark comedy, part-social satire, part-crime thriller and all-failure, this jumbles several different elements together and the result is a mess. There's plenty of potential with the story-line, but the film lacks the pathos and dark comedy that Coen movies like Fargo did with ease.

As well as being a boring mess, it's also a very unlikable movie, with characters so loathsome you'll find yourself wishing a meteor would hit the titular town and have done with it.
