13 Family Films That Will Terrify Children

9. The Black Cauldron

The Witches
Disney

Scariest Moment: The Horned King's entrance will send shivers down your spine. Arguably one of the most atmospheric villain entrances of all time- we've rarely seen a character this terrifying with such presence despite not seeing his face. John Hurt's electrifying voice work certainly helps.

The first and only traditionally-animated Disney film on the list for a reason- disney films contain lots of scary moments, but this is consistently dark and violent throughout. A lesser-known animation is inspired by welsh mythology and results in a weird mix of Lord of the Rings and a Grimm fairytale.

We encounter a rogues' gallery full ghastly witches and an army of the dead, not to mention The Horned King himself... the mythical land of Prydain is not going to lull viewers into a false sense of security. This is a dangerous world with scares lurking around every corner from the get-go.

A great step up from 80's hollywood classics to a more traditionally unnerving film that is going to stay in the family's mind for a long time. If they can brave The Black Cauldron, they have a chance of enduring the rest of the films on the list.
