13 Family Films That Will Terrify Children
8. The Dark Crystal
Scariest Moment: It's all pretty scary, but seeing the emperor's final moments on his deathbed is an experience that is creepy as hell.
The second of Jim Henson's fantasy films to make it onto the list, The Dark Crystal is the far less family-friendly of the two. And Labyrinth is hardly family-friendly. In fact, The Dark Crystal is just plain weird at times. It is a far less accessible film than Labyrinth, as we're thrown straight into a hostile world. There is going to be little to comfort children- everything in this film is pretty damn creepy.
The fact the film and its world are so immersive makes any scary moment that much more scary- because kids and adults alike become so engaged in a world unlike our own, that the horrific Skeksis creatures will stay in your nightmares long after the film has finished.
Definitely one for the braver audiences. Henson's incredible animatronic and puppetry work results in the kind of fantasy film we'll likely never see again.
