13 Films That Really Needed Nicolas Cage

1. The Number 23

The Role: Walter Sparrow (Jim Carrey) Why Nic Cage Would Have Improved It: One of the biggest complaints about Joel Schumacher's ridiculous thriller The Number 23 is that Jim Carrey was wildly miscast in the lead role, as a man who has to fleet between being devoted to his family and, well, something a whole lot more sinister. Though the movie would have been terrible even with Daniel Day-Lewis in the title role, we suspect that Nicolas Cage would've been a far snugger fit for Walter Sparrow. For starters, he's got a ton of experience playing characters with erratic personalities: just look at Vampire's Kiss, Face/Off, Bad Lieutenant, Matchstick Men and Adaptation. In addition to arguably becoming cinema's go-to-maniac, he's proven he can play the down-to-Earth family man (Con Air) with ease, and so would likely have a much firmer handle on The Number 23's admittedly absurd plot twists and turns. It'd still be a bad movie, but at least Cage would make it a lot more fun than the depressing dirge it ended up being in Carrey's misplaced hands. Are there any other roles you wish Nicolas Cage had taken up? Let us know in the comments!
