13 Gloriously Hammy Performances In Comic Book Movies
12. Faye Dunaway (Supergirl)
Faye Dunaways presence in box office bomb and critical dud Supergirl, which also features Peter OToole phoning it in, doesnt quite make the film watchable, but its as good as we get. Her melodramatic performance as the wicked witch Selena makes it obvious that she knew exactly how seriously to take her cardboard cut-out of a villain, and admittedly, her lines dont require much in the way of subtlety. Its difficult to command the power of shadow quietly. Instead, Dunaway draws out all of her lines with absurdly long vowels and misplaced emphasis, which only highlights the scripts shortcomings. When Selena uses her magic, Dunaway conveys it with a fixed stare and increasingly strange gestures, which does nothing to distract from the awful special effects. Its almost a calculated attempt to take all of Supergirls many flaws and turn them up to eleven, which is both unnecessarily cruel and somehow satisfying.
