13 Gloriously Hammy Performances In Comic Book Movies

12. Faye Dunaway (Supergirl)

Faye Dunaway€™s presence in box office bomb and critical dud Supergirl, which also features Peter O€™Toole phoning it in, doesn€™t quite make the film watchable, but it€™s as good as we get. Her melodramatic performance as the wicked witch Selena makes it obvious that she knew exactly how seriously to take her cardboard cut-out of a villain, and admittedly, her lines don€™t require much in the way of subtlety. It€™s difficult to command the €œpower of shadow€ quietly. Instead, Dunaway draws out all of her lines with absurdly long vowels and misplaced emphasis, which only highlights the script€™s shortcomings. When Selena uses her magic, Dunaway conveys it with a fixed stare and increasingly strange gestures, which does nothing to distract from the awful special effects. It€™s almost a calculated attempt to take all of Supergirl€™s many flaws and turn them up to eleven, which is both unnecessarily cruel and somehow satisfying.
