Spider-Man is one of the most reliably bankable superhero commodities there is, with even the lowest-grossing Spidey movie, 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, pulling in a not-bad $709.0 million.
Insane it is, then, that Black Panther not only sailed past that figure, but even managed to out-gross the web-slinger's most successful movie to date, 2007's Spider-Man 3, which landed just shy of $900 million.
With his lighter, more family-friendly tone, Spidey's movies have consistently turned easy profits regardless of quality, yet surprisingly not a single of his six movies has managed to pass the billion dollar mark.
That Black Panther, a seemingly niche superhero without the decades of baked-in appeal that Spidey has, could annihilate him at the box office is just jaw-dropping. Such is the power of the MCU, it seems, not to mention a black demographic terribly under-served by quality tentpole movies.
