The Original Plan

Nobody in their right mind would suggest that Alexander Knox is an integral part of Tim Burton's 1989 Batman, but he was a lot of fun and Robert Wuhl's performance was pretty memorable. He was also the audience's eyes into the film as one of the only "normal" characters on display.

Unfortunately for the earliest versions of the character, he was supposed to be killed by The Joker in the final act.

What Happened Instead?

As Robert Wuhl revealed they "liked [my] character so much that they decided to let me live", so his death in the Joker's attack was written out and he was left to fight another day (badly).

Weirdly, they obviously didn't like him enough to put him in the sequel.
