13 Incredible Moments In Otherwise Forgettable Movies
5. THAT Machine Gun Kill - Live By Night
The Movie: Though hyped-to-hell as a major Oscar contender, Ben Affleck's Argo follow-up was pretty much forgotten by the end of 2016. Though well-acted and technically solid, the plotting was so beholden to gangster movie tropes it bordered on feeling like a parody at times.
That a film with this many talented actors - including Affleck, Zoe Saldana, Brendan Gleeson, Chris Cooper and Elle Fanning - and this much potential could be so boring is actually somewhat impressive.
The Scene: The movie's climactic shootout may be a pretty standard fare gunfight, that is until Dion Bartolo (Chris Messina) pulls off one of the most stylishly bada** kills from any film in the last decade. Seriously.
Dion throws an assailant over a stairwell balcony, at which point he grabs his machine gun and fires literally dozens of bullets into the poor bugger's corpse as he flies down the stairs, bumping into the balconies like a pinball as he does so.
While it would've been easy for this action beat to look a bit silly, it actually looks terrifically violent and just about lands on the right side of plausible-ish. It's an extremely cool, well-executed moment in an otherwise moribund flatline of a gangster flick.
