3. Cymbeline
The Pitch: A contemporary take on William Shakespeare's play, repurposed as a war between the police and a drug-dealing biker gang in the U.S. Milla Jovovich plays the Queen, while the impressive cast also includes Dakota Johnson, Ethan Hawke, Penn Badgley, Anton Yelchin, Ed Harris, John Leguizamo, Bill Pullman and Delroy Lindo. Michael Almereyda, who previously worked with Ethan Hawke on 2000's modern-day Hamlet adaptation, directs.
The Buzz: Reviews were mostly negative right out of the gate (20% on Rotten Tomatoes), with many noting that Cymbeline isn't exactly one of the Bard's best plays, and that most of the inherent flaws in the original narrative are left unaddressed. Though most of the performances themselves have been praised (even if Jovovich reportedly doesn't get anywhere near enough to do) and the direction is seen as stylish, this is one modern update which just doesn't seem to work. That said, it looks insane and ambitious enough that we're still totally going to be there on day one to see it.
