2. The Babadook
The Pitch: Single parent Amelia (Essie Davis) is struggling to raise her 6-year-old son Samuel after her husband died 6 years ago, with Sam claiming that a monster is going to kill them. One day, a storybook, Mister Babadook, arrives at their door, which Sam believes is the monster coming to get them, and after Amelia begins seeing the monster herself, she also becomes convinced.
The Buzz: This Australian horror flick has been a festival favourite ever since its debut at Sundance at the start of the year, holding an impressive 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes so far. Critics have praised the movie's ambiguity, as well as balancing its natural and supernatural elements extremely well, and the subtext relating to guilt, loss and family. Davis' performance also received heaps of praise, as did the direction, all the more impressive given that it's Jennifer Kent's debut feature.
Release Date: It's already out in Australia. October 24th (UK).
