The Pitch: Alejandro González Iñárritu's first film since 2010's Biutiful follows Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton), an actor famous for playing a superhero called Birdman, as he attempts to reinvent himself by starring in a Broadway play, while also trying to get his personal life straight. The cast includes Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, Emma Stone and Naomi Watts. The Buzz: Birdman has been widely buzzed-about ever since its screening at the Venice Film Festival (94% on Rotten Tomatoes), where it officially began mounting its Oscar campaign, with critics praising everything from its Best Picture prospects to Michael Keaton's likely-to-be-Oscar-nominated central performance. The premise sounds delightfully bizarre, it's a wonderfully self-reflexive role for an under-appreciated actor like Keaton, and Iñárritu has reportedly used visual trickery to make the film appear as though it unfolds over one seamless, uninterrupted take.
