12. Tusk
The Pitch: Podcaster Wallace Bryton (Justin Long) goes missing after heading to Canada to interview mysterious mariner Howard Howe (Michael Parks), who kidnaps Wallace and attempts to turn him into a walrus. Yep, you read that right. Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez and Johnny Depp co-star.
The Buzz: Tusk's journey to our screens began in June 2013, when on Kevin Smith's podcast, long-time producer Scott Mosier informed him of a Gumtree ad he read where a homeowner offered free lodgings to a guest if they would dress as a walrus. After getting the thumbs up from his fanbase, Smith leapt on the idea, and by November of that year, had shot the film in a snappy 19 days. Tusk premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last week to mixed-to-positive reviews (58% on Rotten Tomatoes), largely praising Michael Parks' creepy central performance and Smith's willingness to take his career in a bizarre new direction. Negative reviews mainly agreed that it's just weird for the sake of weird.
