10. A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Reflecting On Existence
The Pitch: Swedish director Roy Andersson's surreal black comedy is a series of 37 fixed-camera "skits", roughly one-third of which feature novelty salesmen Sam (Nils Westblom) and Jonathan (Holger Andersson). The challenge to audiences is such: keep your eyes open and scan the frame during each scene, looking for the hilarious and the weird.
The Buzz: In addition to a wave of critical praise (91% on Rotten Tomatoes), the movie won the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival. In their 5-star review of the movie, The Guardian said, "I can no more make sense of this movie than I can explain my own life." Though it's sure to be of niche interest, this sounds like it could be another Holy Motors: delightfully weird, not making a lick of sense, but being tremendously engrossing while you're watching it.
Release Date: November 14th (Sweden), other dates TBA.
