The Pitch: As ever, Quentin Dupieux's latest movie is difficult to classify, though reviews suggest it's a satire of Hollywood, including a sequence in which a man buys a ticket to a movie he hasn't even made yet, at one point asking the protectionist to stop the movie in order for him to fix the sound. Also, a French cameraman tries to find a suitable groan to get his movie bankrolled, a man guts a wild boar which contains a VHS cassette inside, and Jon Heder (aka Napoleon Dynamite) wears an itchy rat outfit while hosting a cooking show.
The Buzz: Despite premiering at the Venice Film Festival in late August, reviews are relatively scarce. Those outlets that bothered with it are relatively mixed:
Variety dismissed it as mindless nonsense, while the
Hollywood Reporter was more forthcoming with praise, as were
Indiewire. The consensus seems to be this: if you enjoyed the barmy stylings of Dupieux's other films such as Rubber, Wrong and Wrong Cops, you're probably going to like this as well. If you think he's a pretentious waste of space, then that's unlikely to changed here.
