13 Major Revelations And Hints From The Ant-Man Trailer
2. Why So Serious?
The single most pertinent criticism of the trailer so far has been its tone, and a lot of that has to do with how different it is to the initial trailer for Guardians Of The Galaxy. It's all terribly middle of the road, and that won't breed any confidence in anyone looking for a reason to watch a film about a superhero who shrinks and rides ants. To say mainstream audiences probably won't care that he's doing it for his daughter is something of an understatement. It's difficult to resist the idea that this would have all been a lot better if the trailer had been led by Paul Rudd rather than Michael Douglas, and if the tone had been a lot more like the Guardians first trailer. Obviously the long-played joke is that it actually will be funny (hence the tonal switcheroo of the final line of the trailer) but Rudd seems to be almost incidental, when the real hook here is that Marvel hired a supremely talented comedic actor, and that they might actually be making another self-consciously funny film. Instead, they went too serious, and made the question of why Paul Rudd was ever considered the right choice to play a father trying to do right by his kid. It's like they forgot what movie they've made for about 40% of the trailer.
