13 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know About Jason Voorhees

12. Jason's Iconic Hockey Mask Almost Wasn't Used

Considering just how etched into horror movie history the hockey mask has become for the Friday the 13th franchise, you wouldn't have expected the filmmakers to have very nearly not used it at all. Then again, that he was mask free in the first movie as a child, wore an old potato burlap bag on his head in the second movie, and didn't grab a hold of the sportswear until a good way into the third movie probably tells you all it needs to.

Originally, the filmmakers wanted Jason to wear an Umpire's mask instead. Notably more open than the hockey mask, this would have meant the special effects for Jason's face would have been on full display - but the team didn't want to undergo a full makeup session every time Jason would be on screen.

So, the hockey mask was decided upon purely to cover up more of his mug and make their lives easier in the end. Fair enough.
