What's a great movie without awesome characters? And in a Hollywood landscape that feels increasingly reliant on nostalgia and previous successes, oh how refreshing it is when a screenwriter, director and actor collaborate to create a memorable screen hero or villain.

These upcoming characters provide a little hope for the future of Hollywood, either by indicating some of the originality that still remains in the industry, or simply classing-up a popular franchise by hurling a brilliant actor into the fray.

These characters are likely to be the most entertaining aspects of their respective movies, and if not, then a whole bundle of acting talent has been summarily wasted. Fingers crossed that these heroes and villains live up to the enormous promise and hope they provide for film fans.

Here are the 13 most anticipated upcoming original film characters...

13. Frank (Seth Rogen) - Sausage Party

The Role: An anthropomorphic sausage who resides in a supermarket with his fellow food buddies, his goal being to get purchased by a customer along with the object of his affection, a hot dog bun named Brenda (Kristen Wiig). Once they find out what people really do with food, however, they plot a revolt to escape their fate.

Why You Should Be Excited: Because if early reviews are to be believed, Sausage Party is the raunchiest, most offensive and funniest film of the year, and a big part of that is thanks to its meat-based protagonist.

This is a typical Seth Rogen role through and through...except he's animated...and he's a sausage. His quest to "get inside Brenda's bun" just might be the most relatable and understandable character motivation of 2016.
