2. The Wife

The Wife Glenn Close
Sony Pictures Classics

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 84% (7.1/10)

Were it not for Glenn Close's admittedly brilliant performance, nobody would've remembered this flatly shot melodrama for more than a week after it hit limited release.

The Wife is a quaint, milquetoast film about a put-upon wife mentally imploding on the eve of her pompous husband (Jonathan Pryce) receiving a Nobel Prize in Literature.

Close's subtle and finally volcanic performance is terrific, but outside of this the film is stuffy, shot with little imagination and too often feels like a play filmed for the screen.

It is exactly what people think of when they imagine both art-house cinema and Oscar-bait in a negative sense, and without vets like Close and Pryce at the helm, it would've been an interminable slog.
