First things first, there is absolutely no arguing against the nobility of Peter Jackson's effort to restore and colorise World War I footage - for which he received no directors' fee - but given the near-universal acclaim, it's a tad surprising just how inconsistent the end result is.

Unfortunately Jackson's restoration has perhaps proven a little too intrusive for its own good: though the general colorisation is impressive, soldiers' faces have an extremely distracting uncanny valley look to them, having been digitally treated to the point that they look like crude approximations of actual people.

Jackson also splices footage together in a manipulative way that's often rather icky, cutting from pictures of smiling soldiers to dead ones, the obvious implication being that they're the very same people despite that obviously not being the case at all.

The film has obvious educational merit and offers an eye-opening look at the Great War, but it's also an overzealous effort that too often lets technology and egregious documentary techniques get in the way of the human story.
