8. The Hate U Give

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 97% (8.2/10)

As far as young adult adaptations go, The Hate U Give is at least refreshingly timely and well-acted, but it's also far too clumsy and simplistic as written to tackle the subject of police shootings of black people with any depth or nuance.

Director George Tillman Jr. meanwhile helms his film with all the cinematic flair of a Lifetime Movie of the Week, deferring to the most laughably predictable, unsubtle attempts at wringing tears from viewers' eyes.

You can argue it's simply a triumph that the movie even exists and young people can see a film with an Important Message, but when the execution is so embarrassingly hackneyed and obvious, is this really what today's youth has to settle for?

Clearly with a more confident, less-patronising filmmaker at the helm, the material wouldn't have come across quite so corny. As it stands, it's baffling that critics went so gaga for this one.
