How could the material powerful enough to incapacitate Superman not make it pretty high on this list?

Kryptonite is such an important element that it has transcended even its source: it's now recognisable to those who would charitably consider themselves only casual DC comics fans, and that's no small feat.

The element comes from Clark Kent's own planet, with the green version that weakens him to the point of rendering him normal most plentiful. It's not the only type though, and different types come with different effects. Red Kryptonite comes with a rainbow of effects as no pieces are the same, but highlights include transforming Superman temporarily into a dragon, a dwarf and a telepath.

The traditional Green stuff has already been responsible (at least partly) for the deaths of both Superman and Doomsday too, making this the most deadly item on this list so far (aside from the Bat).

It's also hazardous to humans too after long exposure.
