13 Most Pretentious Movies Of All Time

5. American Beauty

Tree Of Life
DreamWorks

Okay, let's get this out of the way straight off the bat: American Beauty has not aged well whatsoever. You know why.

Where to start with American Beauty? First off the dialogue., the dialogue in American Beauty is so clunky and wooden that it takes you completely out of the moment. There cannot be a single person in the world who actually talks like Wes Bentley's character in this movie. And while we're on the topic, there is absolutely nothing profound about a plastic bag blowing in the wind.

American Beauty desperately wants to shed light on the hollow nature of living an empty suburban life, but it's such a ham-fisted attempt that it comes across as completely shallow and unnatural.
