13 Movies With Hilariously Inappropriate Product Placement

4. Coca Cola - The Long Goodbye

Product Placement: Robert Altman's classic film noir features a scene in which protagonist Philip Marlowe (Elliot Gould) is confronted by a gangster and his goons. The lead gangster's mistress interrupts his diatribe, insisting she's thirsty, at which point he orders one of his lackeys to fetch a drink from the fridge. The man returns with a mostly-empty glass bottle of Coke, at which point the gangster takes a swig, complains that it's flat, and then smashes the glass bottle over his mistress's face. She spends the next while writhing around on the bed, staining the sheets with the blood pouring profusely from her face. Why It's Inappropriate: Because no company on Earth wants to be associated with violent acts (except maybe the nice people at Smith and Weston), as viewers may unconsciously associate the product with psychotic behaviour in the future. What does this scene say about Coke? That it's flat, and will as such unleash your inner insane criminal in an instant. One can only imagine the tables that were flipped once Coca Cola found out how their product was used in this movie.
