13. Oliver! (1968)
An age-old classic, Charles Dickens' beloved Oliver Twist has spread itself across a host of media. Of course, there was the novel; and the stage-adaption; and the numerous filmic reincarnations. Although Roman Polanski delivered a sombre imagining, the one that stands out is Carol Reed's Oscar-winning, Oliver!, a sweeping, whimsical musical full of heart. It remains as one of the most celebrated films of all time, as do the characters. Who didn't want to be the Artful Dodger when they were young? Fagan and the gang may have been a band of pickpockets and thieves, but it didn't stop us falling in love with them. Maybe it had something to do with the catchy numbers or the incredible set-design, but from our standpoint, Fagan and the Dodger where doing nothing wrong - the real bad guy was always Bill Sykes. Whether Fagan was prancing around to 'Pick a Pocket or Two' or Dodger was inducting Oliver into the gang with a sprightly 'Consider Yourself', Oliver! captured our hearts and put us in-line with the central characters, who made homelessness and robbery seem like the most charming thing in the world.
