13 Movies So Awful You Walked Out Of The Cinema

3. Holy Motors

Les Films Du Losange

Just as there are some who will tell you that Only God Forgives and The Tree Of Life are both works of genius, there are also some who will say that Leos Carax's weird fantasy Holy Motors is clever and delightful. Indeed, the film has an astonishing 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which proves without a shadow of a doubt that critics cannot be counted on to tell normal audiences what films they should go and see.

That response - or at least the black and white, pass/fail way Rotten Tomatoes presented it - was irresponsible, because it suggested that Holy Motors is good. It is not good - it is interesting and provocative and strange, but it's not good by any traditional marker.

Any mainstream fan who wandered in on the back of the 91% would have found a wildly odd fever dream of nonsense, prosthetic erections, talking limousines and chimpanzees. And that's not even close to a true reflection of how weird it all is. It's no wonder people walked.
