13 Movies That Depressingly Predicted The Future

10. User-Targeted Marketing - Minority Report

Videodrome Saw
DreamWorks

In Minority Report's tech-soaked 2050s America, John Anderton (Tom Cruise) walks through a mall only to find himself assaulted by adverts for Guinness, Lexus, The Gap and so on, tailored directly to his tastes by way of retinal scanners situated throughout the mall.

It's not exactly a million miles away from the targeted marketing we see on sites like Facebook, Google, Amazon and so on, reading our social networking activities and prior purchases to try and incentivise our next one.

While society is probably still a while away from these retinal scanners and holographic projections as seen in the movie, it nevertheless perfectly captures the privacy-eroding insidiousness of current marketing trends.

Plus, it's one of the few product placements in a movie that isn't totaly obnoxious.
