How It Ended: After Norman Bates is captured, a psychiatrist spends about five minutes explaining every last detail of his condition, before Norman hears his dead mother's voice talking to him, and Marion's car is pulled out of the swamp.
How It Should've Ended: When Norman, wearing his mother's clothes, attempts to kill Lila and is finally captured, you've pretty much got a pitch perfect ending right there. Nothing else is needed.
The twist is revealed, the intensity is top-notch (thanks to fantastic music and shot selection), and everything that follows it just unnecessary exposition for the lowest common denominator.
It's probably one of the most baffling creative decisions Hitchcock made in his entire career, but at least it's easy enough to just turn the movie off at its natural end-point.
