13 Movies You Didn't Know Were Responsible For Weird Cinematic Milestones
10. Blazing Saddles Was The First Mainstream Picture To Feature A Fart Joke
Of course, it probably makes total sense in retrospect that Mel Brooks was the one who made fart jokes okay for mainstream entertainment - but can you believe that, up until 1974, fart jokes simply weren't a thing? Every second movie released today seems to make at least one passing reference to the notion of flatulence, with fart jokes acting as a sort of go-to place for screenwriters who want a cheap, easy laugh.
Back in '74, fart jokes were super revolutionary. It's thought, then (according to film critic David Kehr, anyway), that the famous scene set around the campfire in Brooks' Blazing Saddles - where the movie's heroes ingest far too many beans for their own good and end up farting consecutively, one after the other - gave birth to the modern movie fart joke. And, yes, we've been smelling 'em in low-brow comedies ever since.
