13 Movies You Loved As A Child (But Hate As An Adult)
5. The Mighty Ducks (1992)
You might be shocked to learn that The Mighty Ducks has a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 15%, though watch it back in anger and you'll soon come to see that rating as a tad generous. The film follows Minneapolis lawyer Gordon Bombay after he is sentenced to community service for a drunk-driving offence. As punishment, the former hockey player is made to coach a pee-wee team made up of loveable (at least, they used to be) misfits and soon finds himself haunted by his own shortcomings as a hockey player. This came at a time when Disney and sports movies could do no wrong, and star Emilio Estevez was still one of the most charming faces in cinema. Plus the downtrodden hockey team resonated wonderfully with fans - we all love an underdog story after all. You should never expect too much from child actors, though there is no excusing Estevez here. The Young Guns actor really does seem as though he is simply fulfilling a tiresome stretch of community service in The Mighty Ducks, not to mention the truly awful sequels. Even if the original is the pick of the bunch, it is still little more than a painfully routine sports movie that might have been considered passable had the on-ice action (if you can really call it that) been any more exciting than what was happening off it.
